The Inter-Asia Engagements Cluster approaches Asia as an assemblage of continental land masses, maritime and archipelagic circuits, and communities that are spatialized in diverse ways. Asia is referenced not only to spaces beyond such as in terms of relations with European, American and African worlds , but also in connectivities and complex historical and contemporary relationships that bind and shape the region itself. With increasing political, economic and cultural interconnectedness and interdependence in global geopolitics, Asia needs to be placed centre stage. New mappings and modes of thinking are required to move beyond inherited territorial units of analysis that characterize traditional area studies approaches. Another major Inter-Asia Engagements Cluster initiative funded by the Singapore Social Science Research Council explores diverse transboundary linkages involved in efforts to sustainably govern the environmental commons of Southeast Asia. While existing work has therefore largely concerned transregional and transnational connectivities, the cluster also encompasses work on inter-Asia engagements at other scales. Conceptually and empirically, the Inter-Asia Engagements Cluster examines regional and local challenges to contemporary global capitalism, dilemmas of environment-society relations, inter-cultural dynamics of diaspora communities, circulatory and transnational flows in the reframing of sovereignty, and reconfigurations of contact zones and frontier assemblages. Our results suggest that the racial hierarchy framework best explains lower likelihood of involvement among Asian American men.
